INSTRUCTIONS FOR WEARING ORTHOTICS

It will take between 1 and 6 weeks to get used to wearing your orthotics. During this adjustment period, there may be some discomfort in the form of foot or leg cramping or direct irritation to the arches.

  1. Wear the orthotics 1-2 hours the first day. Then gradually increase the wear time a few hours per day until you can tolerate wearing them all day. For some people it takes longer, and with others, a shorter period to become accustomed to wearing the orthotics.
  1. To make room for the orthotics, you might have to remove the shoe’s existing insoles. If you feel you need more cushioning in the toes, you can buy a pair of Dr. Scholl’s air pillow insoles at most pharmacies or drug stores and place them under the orthotics. If your orthotics have full-length top covers, they may need to be trimmed to fit in your shoes. You can do this by taking out the shoe's existing insole and using that as a template to cut around.
  1. Do not perform athletic activities with your orthotics until you can walk in them all day without discomfort.
  1. Wear socks or stockings with the orthotics to reduce skin irritation.
  1. Rub candle wax on the sides of the orthotics if they squeak in your shoes.
  1. Your orthotics will last approximately 3-7 years. If your orthotics have top covers, they will need to be changed periodically due to wear.
  1. Most importantly, your orthotics are only as good as the shoes you put them in. Make sure you wear them in a well-fitting, supportive shoe.
  1. Keep your orthotic molds in case you want a second pair. Some insurance companies will approve one pair of orthotics per calendar year. If you are interested in having another exact pair made or a different style made, we will be happy to check with your insurance to see if these benefits are available. Orthotics can also be made for some sandals including Birkenstocks, as long as they have a removable foot bed. Ski and snowboard boot orthotics are also available.
